Rajkumari et al. in their article on "Surgical site infections (SSI) in orthopedic trauma surgeries" noted that [1] "SSI is prevalent in orthopedic trauma patients and an active surveillance program will help in early management and prevention." SSI is indeed an important concern in traumatology. Al-Mulhim, et al. noted that "emergency surgical procedures carried the greatest risk with Staphylococcus spp and Acinetobacter species spp being the most common infecting organisms." [2] Several factors can induce SSI and these also affect the outcome. Diabetes mellitus for instance can significantly worsen outcome of SSI. [3] Also, use of prophylactic antimicrobials can modify the course and outcome of SSI. [4] These confounders were not addressed by the authors.
