I read the article Medical education in Maharashtra: The student perspective [1] with great interest. The authors have done an interesting study and have raised concern over a very sensitive and important issue. The story is much similar in most of the other states in India. I would like to draw your attention to another relevant issue. In India, the selection of students both in the undergraduate course (for MBBS) and postgraduate course is based on objective multiple choice question test, which is more or less a theory based exam. However, there is no stress laid on the practical aspect of knowledge and communication skills which are the basic necessities of a good doctor. In comparison, in USA, a separate exam of Clinical Skills (Step 2 - CS) is taken to judge these parameters before the medical students are admitted for post-graduation studies. The consequence is that in India the students give more importance to theoretical knowledge and much less to more important practical training. It would have been interesting to see what students in India think about the pattern of entrance examination system here. The bureaucrats, policy makers and MCI (Medical Council of India) need to do a lot to upgrade the standard of medical education in India. It is high time that we introduce reforms in the system of medical education system so that the quality of medical services provided is improved.
