Two hundred and twenty one consecutive cases of bronchogenic carcinomas were studied histologically for evidence of associated lesions. Seventy eight lesions were seen in 55 patients (24.8%). The most frequent was tuberculosis, seen in 29 patients. The next in frequency were scars, in 22, emphysema in 12 and thickened pleura in 7. Interstitial fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, lobar pneumonia and bronchiectasis, were other lesions, seen in very few cases. The types of carcinoma, in which associated lesions seen were, undifferentiated carcinoma (76%), adeno-carcinoma (56%), mixed tumor (37%), large cell anaplastic (25%), small cell anaplastic (23.7%) and epidermoid carcinoma in (5.44%). The incidence of tuberculous lesions in autopsies unassociated with tumor is 7%, as compared to 24.8% incidence of association with carcinoma; which is significant. There were seven scar cancers; with origin in tuberculous scars in two. The study indicates necessity of prospective study in this field.

A rare case of simultaneous disruption of superior radio-ulnar joint and posterior dislocation of the same elbow in a 6 year old boy is presented. It was possible to achieve the stable reduction by means of closed manipulation, restoring normal function in 6 weeks time. The possible mode of injury is discussed. There are only 4 cases reported of such a divergent elbow dislocation in modern literature.

A forty-year-old male patient was admitted with acute intestinal obstruction, plain X-ray abdomen and chest revealing air fluid levels on the right side of chest. A successful operation was carried out and the patient made an uneventful recovery. Obstructed Morgagni's Hernia is an uncommon case and hence the presentation.

Median rhomboid glossitis is an inflammatory lesion of the tongue, now believed to be secondary to candidiasis. We document a case of median rhomboid glossitis with heavy colonisation by Actinomyces in a 60-year-old male. We propose that Actinomyces, like Candida, induces pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the mucosa of the tongue and florid inflammatory hyperplasia of the underlying connective tissue, resulting in the characteristic elevated lesion. Actinomyces has not earlier been implicated as a cause of median rhomboid glossitis.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of intra-umbilical oxytocin in minimizing the blood loss during 3rd and 4th stage of labour. Seventy-five pregnant multigravidas without any obstetric or medical complications were studied. It was found that the expulsion of the placenta was rapid as compared to the group treated with normal saline but not with methylergometrine. The drop in hemoglobin and hematocrit was comparable in patients receiving intra-umbilical oxytocin and those with active management of 3rd stage with methylergometrine.

Total serum cholesterol and its components high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein were estimated in serum of 409 children (212 males and 197 females) of 189 patients with myocardial infarction (MI). The patients were divided into 2 groups--1. having MI before the age of 40 years and 2. having it after 40 years. Three hundred and nine children were of parents belonging to group 1 and 100 children were of parents from group 2. Lipid patterns of these children were compared. Comparison was also carried out in subgroups made as per the age and sex of the parents. It was concluded that the disease is more likely to transfer from young patients to their children. Both paternal as well as maternal effects exist in young patients of MI but the paternal effect is dominant. In children of parents having myocardial infarct at a latter age, maternal effect is predominant. The lipid patterns of male and female case-children were also compared with the respective controls. More significant differences in the levels were observed in male case-children indicating that the disease is more likely to transfer in male case-children.

Vitreous loss is a dreaded complication of cataract surgery, especially so with IOL implant which then may have to be abandoned. Thirty three cases of IOL implants, either anterior chamber or posterior chamber, after vitreous loss done in the past 3 years were studied. Of these, 18 (55%) had a final visual acuity of 6/18 or better and none was worse than 6/60. The postoperative complications and findings and a review of literature are discussed.

Lymphatic blockage due to a non-specific inflammation probably of a filarial origin caused dilatation and ectasia of lymph channels at thoracic inlet of a child. Transudation of lymph through these channels led to chylothorax. The present case report highlights the significance of conservative approach towards this complex problem.

A study was undertaken to determine the sex discrimination in child rearing in an urban low socio-economic chawl type of community. Totally 1101 children in the age group of 0-14 years (631 females and 470 males) in 346 families selected at random were studied. It was found that educational and nutritional status of both the sexes were comparable but partial coverage or non-coverage of immunisation was observed in more girls as compared to boys. Majority of parents (93.9%) expressed that they would get their daughter married after 18 years of age.

A significant decrease in the visual and auditory reaction times (VRT and ART) was found in 50 smokers as compared to healthy controls of the same age group (P less than 0.001). The acute effect of smoking one cigarette was also studied in the same group of smokers and a statistically significant reduction was found (P less than 0.001) as compared to their basal VRT and ART.

Combination chemotherapy studies were carried out in vivo against sarcoma 180 (ascites)(S180) and Ehrlich (ascites) carcinoma (EAC) tumours using cytotoxic drugs and methoxyphenyl maleamic acid (MPMA), an intermediate in the synthesis of pyrrolidine-nitrogen-mustards. Preliminary data have suggested that the combination of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and methoxyphenyl maleamic acid (MPMA) was more active than 5-FU used singly against EAC tumour. The possible therapeutic potential of this combination was further investigated in EAC tumour.
